Oblate remembered for love of First Nations
By Agnieszka Krawczynski

NORTH VANCOUVER

An Oblate priest with a deep love for First Nations people has died unexpectedly.

Father John Brioux, OMI, pastor of St. Paul’s Indian Catholic Church, suffered a heart attack and passed away May 24.

“I am really saddened at the loss, for me, and my wife, and our community,” said Deacon Rennie Nahanee, the first Native permanent deacon ordained in the Archdiocese of Vancouver. He met Father Brioux when the latter came to serve at St. Paul’s seven years ago.

“Father Brioux was not only a great priest, but also a father figure to us and to a lot of people in the community.”

The Oblate of Mary Immaculate was known as a good friend to the First Nations community; he would wear regalia to funeral Masses, learn Squamish Nation words, and even incorporate cedar branches and eagle feathers in some ceremonies. “He was a very loving man.”

Father Brioux was pastor of St. Augustine’s Parish for 11 years before moving to St. Paul’s. He was also the superior of the B.C. district of the Lacombe Canada province for the Oblates.

There will be a viewing and prayer service at St. Paul's in North Vancouver May 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Prayers will be held June 1 at 7:00 p.m. and the funeral will be held June 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine's Parish.
